Environmental sustainability, neighborhood
support, as well as quality, local, and organic ingredients are at the
center of Black Bear Bakery's mission. Black Bear bakes the famous
Lickhalter rye breads, around St. Louis since 1916, as well as a
selection of organic whole grain breads.Black Bear is also known for
its sweets including raspberry oat bars, ginger almond scones, spinach
pastries and fudge brownies. Since 1998 Black Bear Bakery, a
worker-owned collective, has been baking fine old world and natural
whole grain breads as well as a great variety of cookies, pastries,
scones, muffins, granola, and even New York style bagels all using only
the best and often organic ingredients.
In addition to our delicious
and healthy foods, Black Bear is also dedicated to being a different
kind of work place that allows its participants to be at the center of
a worker-controlled environment. Black Bear is also proud to have
community involvement and grassroots agitation at the very core of our
mission.
We are excited to announce that
we are now open for breakfast on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm serving
buttermilk corncakes and buckwheat pancakes, french toast, bagels,
eggs, granola and pastries. The bakery and cafe are located in
the beautifully restored Vandora Theater featuring 18 foot ceilings and
a balcony. We envision this space to be far more than a bakery
but also a community meeting space, cinema, art gallery, music venue,
play house, library, and hub for organizing and meetings. We
would also love to hear what types of things you would like to see
happen here.
Black Bear Bakery is located at
2639 Cherokee Street in South St. Louis. Here
